Independent with a mineral-spiciness and full of cool liveliness and structure.
Blaufränkisch EISENBERGDAC and EISENBERGDAC RESERVE are wines with an unmistakable GOÛT DE TERROIR stemming from the iron-rich soils of their vineyards.
EisenbergDAC
For over a century, the name “Eisenberger” has been synonymous with the typical Blaufränkisch wines from southern Burgenland. In 2010, the region was officially recognized by law as an area for wines with a specific origin, known as “Eisenberg DAC.” DAC stands for Districtus Austriae Controllatus, a classification introduced in 2002 to define regionally typical Austrian quality wines. This classification serves to protect the designation of origin (PDO) under EU law and officially revives the region’s old winemaking tradition. Originally, Eisenberg DAC was exclusively intended for red wines made from Blaufränkisch, which must consist of 100% of this grape variety. This gives consumers a clear picture of the origin, style, and quality of wines from this region.
In 2023, the Eisenberg wine region underwent a significant expansion: alongside Blaufränkisch, Welschriesling was also elevated to DAC status. This long-underestimated white grape variety, historically rooted in the region, shows its full potential here and has become a firm part of the region’s identity. The decision to position Welschriesling equally alongside Blaufränkisch reflects the diversity and adaptability of the region.
BLAUFRÄNKISCH EisenbergDAC
Minerality and Elegance from Southern Burgenland
Since 2010 (first vintage 2008), Blaufränkisch has represented the distinctive wine tradition of the Eisenberg region as a DAC. These wines are characterized by an unmistakable mineral-fruity spiciness, with aromas of fresh red and dark berries and a hint of white pepper. The soil composition, particularly the high iron content, and the significant temperature fluctuations between day and night shape the character of these wines. The influence of the crystalline bedrock results in pronounced fruitiness, a lean extract structure, and dominant minerality, making Blaufränkisch from Eisenberg truly unique.
The Taste of Blaufränkisch Eisenberg DAC
Wines from this region present themselves as delicate, mineral, and elegantly spicy. The aromas of dark berries, white pepper, and herbs are characteristic and highlight the uniqueness of the Eisenberg terroir. Studies confirm that the geological structures of the vineyards have a direct impact on the flavor profile of the wines. The higher mineral content, such as potassium, calcium, sodium, and phosphorus, imparts a special quality to Blaufränkisch from Eisenberg. An elegant structure, lively acidity, and fine, ripe tannins make Blaufränkisch Eisenberg DAC a true delight. The wines are traditionally aged in large wooden barrels.
WELSCHRIESLING EisenbergDAC
Elegance and Freshness
Welschriesling, a grape variety with unclear origins but closely linked to the history of the region, achieved DAC status in 2023. This variety, which adapts particularly well to the climatic conditions of the area, has been cultivated in the region for centuries. It gained significance after the decline of Furmint in the 19th century and today represents the dominant white grape variety in southern Burgenland.
The Taste of Welschriesling Eisenberg DAC
Welschriesling from the Eisenberg region impresses with elegance, character, structure, and length. The unique soil composition and the special Pannonian-Illyrian climate create perfect conditions for this variety. Welschriesling reaches its full potential especially in the higher-altitude vineyards around Rechnitz and Csaterberg. Despite the different soil mosaics and microclimates, the regional origin is unmistakable: the wines present themselves with a typical spicy minerality, freshness, and exceptional aging potential.
